Trainer: João Rocha (University of Évora – CIDEHUS; Department of Architecture)
23 June, 2025 | Hours: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Module description:
How has photography contributed to the construction and recognition of a Mediterranean cultural landscape? The workshop will reflect on the diversity of a geographical space that has fostered the idea of completeness and will question how photography enhanced that same concept. In this context, built spaces, cities, civil and religious monuments, have been the favourite subjects of photographic missions since the mid 19th century to the present day. The Workshop aims to illustrate the most significant moments in this photographic journey, bringing to light the confluence of a variety of building structures many of which belong to a common cultural heritage. Moreover, through collaborative reasoning participants will be asked to construct their own interpretation (reading) of that same cultural space and how could they propose and foresee a contemporary photographic storyteller that could enhance the known boarders of the Mediterranean area.
Learning objectives:
- Recognize the plural and cultural diversity and at same time uniqueness of the Mediterranean architectural landscape;
- Identify the main photographers and associated ideologies that pioneered a vision of the Mediterranean built landscape;
- To develop a critical attitude towards de definition of built heritage;
- To develop a photographic storyteller.
Workshop Format: Online. Expository session and interactive class, group work, research, and debate.
Equipment required: Laptop or other device that allows online search and selection of information.
